📋 Ingredients
For the Chocolate Cake
● 1 box German chocolate cake mix
● 1 cup whole milk
● 3 large eggs
● ½ cup vegetable oil
For the Gooey Caramel Layer
● 1 bag (11 oz) soft caramel candies
● ½ cup evaporated milk
For the Filling
● 1 cup chocolate chips
● 1 cup chopped pecans
For the Topping
● ½ cup caramel sauce
● ½ cup chopped pecans
● Optional chocolate drizzle
📝 Instructions
1: Prepare the oven and pan
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper for easier cleanup later.
2: Make the cake batter
In a large bowl, prepare the German chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions using the milk, eggs, and vegetable oil. Mix until smooth and creamy.
3: Bake the first layer
Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
Bake for about 15 minutes, just until the cake begins to set but is still soft in the center. Remove from the oven and set aside.
4: Melt the caramel
While the cake is baking, combine the caramel candies and evaporated milk in a saucepan over low heat.
Stir constantly until the caramel melts into a smooth, silky sauce. Take your time here so it doesn’t burn.
5: Add the gooey filling
Pour the warm caramel mixture evenly over the partially baked cake layer.
Sprinkle the chocolate chips and chopped pecans all over the caramel so every bite gets a little crunch and melted chocolate goodness.
6: Add the final cake layer
Carefully spoon the remaining cake batter over the top and gently spread it out to cover the filling as much as possible.
It doesn’t have to look perfect — the rustic layers make this cake even better.
7: Finish baking
Return the cake to the oven and bake for another 20–25 minutes, or until the top is set and the cake is fully baked.
Be careful not to overbake, or the caramel layer can become too firm instead of soft and gooey.
8: Cool and decorate
Let the cake cool slightly before adding the toppings.
Drizzle caramel sauce generously over the top, then sprinkle with extra chopped pecans. Add melted chocolate drizzle if you want an even more indulgent finish.
9: Serve and enjoy
Slice while slightly warm for the ultimate gooey caramel pull, or let it cool for cleaner slices with rich layered texture.
